Birth Control Q&A

What is birth control?

Birth control refers to the various methods available that prevent you from getting pregnant.

Though some methods work better at preventing pregnancy than others, the best one for you depends on your current and future pregnancy plans, as well as your health.

Carlos Rodriguez Ortiz MD, PA, and his team specialize in helping their patients find the right birth control that fits their needs.

What are some types of birth control?

You have many options when it comes to birth control. The types of birth control available include:

Sterilization

Sterilization is a permanent form of birth control. Though one of the most effective forms of contraception, the team only recommends sterilization if you have no future pregnancy plans.

During this minimally invasive surgical procedure, they cut or block your fallopian tubes, preventing your egg from meeting up with sperm.

Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs)

LARCs include intrauterine devices (IUDs) and birth control implants. The team places these devices in your body, which prevent pregnancy for 3-10 years, or when you decide to have the device removed.

LARCs work by stopping ovulation, preventing sperm from reaching an egg, or making it impossible for an egg to implant itself into the uterus.

Short-acting hormonal methods

Birth control pills, patches, and shots are short-acting hormonal methods of birth control. You must use them as directed for them to be most effective.

Barrier methods

Barrier methods of birth control include condoms, diaphragms, and the cervical cap. You must use these methods each time you have sex to prevent pregnancy. Condoms also protect against some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).
